For the most part, people want to spend as little time in jail as they possibly can. Unfortunately, bail, even for minor crimes, can be prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of people. Luckily, bail bondsmen are available to help people get out of jail faster by putting up the bulk of the bail that is required while only charging a person a certain percentage fee in order to retain their services. Once this fee is paid to the bondsman, they will post the full balance of a person’s bail on the condition that the person shows up at their appointed court date. As long as the person shows up to court when they are supposed to, the bail is refunded to the bondsman. However, what happens if a defendant doesn’t show up for their appointed court date? When a person does not show up to court on their appointed court date, bondsmen are not able to recoup the bail that they posted in order to get their client out of jail. Typically, the bounty hunters are paid a percentage of the bail money that gets recovered and, while that means that the bondsman still loses a little bit of money, they lose much less in comparison to the amount they stand to lose if the fugitive is never found.

Barring the fact that you will get in more trouble if you skip your court date, a bondsman has every legal right to hire a bounty hunter to find you and return you to the municipality in which you were arrested.
